Nearly 70 farmers, ranchers and industry leaders from across British Columbia are in Victoria today, bringing forward practical solutions to priorities on topics such as safeguarding the sector’s need for the temporary foreign worker program, securing access to water, and the mounting pressures on farmland and competing jurisdictions.
Today, BC Agriculture Council (BCAC) is proud to announce its upcoming BC Agriculture Forum. The event will bring together industry leaders, government decision-makers, and key partners to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the competitiveness and future of B.C.’s agricultural sector.

The joy of farming is in the ritual of putting a seed in the ground, watching a plant emerge, and bringing it to maturity. Winemaker Tyler Harlton grew up on a grain farm in Saskatchewan – where these rites of agriculture were a lifestyle – and he considers his Summerland, BC winery an extension of the work in his childhood.
Mohinder Dhaliwal learned from his parents and grandparents about the value of hard work on the farm. After he immigrated to Penticton, BC from India, he naturally turned to farming as a way of life.
Nirmal Dhaliwal farms south of Oliver, BC with his sons, Sunny and Mahmeet. He has worked on this farm since the 1990s and, a few years ago, took over the orchards from his parents. “I like working outdoors,” he says. “And you can have your kids with you.” He laughs and points out that they’re a bit young right now, but “they try and they’re learning.”
When Surinder Shergill came to Canada he knew he wanted to be a farmer. It took him 17 years of working in a factory to save enough money to buy his orchard.
Growing up on an apple orchard, you dream of the day you can leave. That was the case with Tony DiMaria as a young man on his father’s orchard in Kelowna and it turned out to be the case for Tony’s own son, Antonio.
Many farmers hope that their children will take over farm some day. For the Gills of Lake Country, BC – that dream is coming true.
